There is a growing interest in monitoring body condition of marine organisms in the context of the ecosystem approach to fisheries and global change. Fish condition is under the influence of environmental variability on seasonal scale, but also on longer timescales. It represents a good indicator of habitat quality or individual fitness, and is also a relevant parameter to evaluate energy transfer through the trophic chain. However, the sources of variability in fish condition need to be accurately understood and the significance of existing indices has to be correctly assessed. Here, we measured the energy density, a precise and global indicator of fish bioenergetic condition, for anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) in the... |

Fish are the main source of the n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids, which are crucial for human health. Their synthesis from C18 precursors is mediated by desaturases and elongases, but the activity of these enzymes has not been conclusively established in marine fish species. This study reports the cloning, tissue expression, and functional characterization of a sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) Δ6-desaturase and one of its splicing variants. Two cDNAs with open reading frames of 1,346 and 1,354 bp were cloned and named D6D and D6D-V, respectively. Both deduced protein sequences (445 and 387 amino acids, respectively) contained two transmembrane regions and the N-terminal cytochrome b5 domain with the HPGG motif characteristic of microsomal desaturases.... |

An 84-day experiment assessed the combined effects of two fresh water quality levels (H: 1.71 +/- 0.15 mg O(2)l(-1) and 0.28 +/- 0.01 mg l(-1) total ammonia nitrogen (T-AN), L: 5.15 +/- 0.07 mg O2l(-1) and 0.54 +/- 0.01 mg T- AN l(-1)) and 3 stabilized stocking densities: 24.8 +/- 0.2, 74.2 +/- 0.5 and 120.0 +/- 0.9 kg m(-3)) on rainbow trout. Fish were fed using demand feeders with rewards proportional to stocking density. Mass increase was significantly affected by water quality and stocking density, being highest in H water and the lowest at 120 kg m(-3). There was no significant difference in final weight between 25 and 74 kg m(-3), but at 120 kg m(-3) it was 27% and 19% lower in H and L water respectively than at 25 kg m(-3). Feed intake (FI) from day... |

The objective of this study was to evaluate the combined effects of thermal acclimation and n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA) content of the food source on the aerobic capacities of fish in a thermal changing environment. The model used was the golden grey mullet Liza aurata, a species of high ecological importance in temperate coastal areas. For four months, fish were exposed to two food sources with contrasting n-3 HUFA contents (4.8% ecosapentaenoic acid EPA + docosahexaenoic acid DHA on the dry matter DM basis vs. 0.2% EPA+DHA on DM) combined with two acclimation temperatures (12 degrees C vs. 20 degrees C). The four experimental conditions were LH12, LH20, HH12 and HH20. Each group was then submitted to a thermal challenge consisting of... |

Triplicate groups of European sea bass juveniles (60 g) were fed for 84 days two experimental diets containing either vegetable or marine oil (0.4 and 2.2% n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid [n-3 HUFA] dry matter in LD and HD, respectively) and held at 22 or 29 degreesC (LD-22, LD-29, HD-22 and HD-29 groups). Significant differences in mass gain between the two diets and temperatures were, observed from day 28 onwards, and on day 84, weight was 18% higher in the HD-29 group than in the LD-22 group (the highest and lowest values. respectively). Over the 84-day period-SGR was significantly affected both by temperatures and diets (P=6x10(-4) and 2x10(-4) respectively), averaging 1.01 and 1.07 in the HD-22 and HD-29 groups compared to 0.92 and 1.0 in the LD-22... |

Plant-based products in fish diets are valuable protein alternatives to fishmeal for the aquafeed industry. Many plant feed ingredients contain polyphenolic compounds, including tannins, which can have beneficial or adverse effects. The tolerable threshold of ingested tannins is unknown for marine carnivorous fishes. We studied the effects of tannic acid (TA) supplementation to the diet of juvenile European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) by measuring growth, feed utilization and digestibility, and carcass composition. We randomly allocated groups of fish (initial mean body weight of 10.2 ± 0.7 g; n = 40 fish per tank) to 12 replicate cylindrical-conical tanks (three per treatment). The fish were assigned to one of four dietary treatments for five weeks:... |

Growth and metabolism of juvenile European sea bass of a Western Mediterranean population were assessed at six constant temperatures (13, 16, 19, 22, 25 or 29 degreesC) in an 84-day trial. Duplicated groups of 84 fish (initial weight 80 I g) were held under O-2-concentrations close to saturation (87 mg l(-1)) and were fed to satiation. Mass gain increased as temperature increased from 13 to 25 degreesC. At 25 and 29 degreesC, growth was similar up to day 72, but a 6% decrease was observed by day 84 at 29 degreesC. Days 0-84 specific growth rates (SGR) were 0.45%,1.29% and 1.21% day(-1) at 13, 25 and 29 degreesC, respectively. The estimated temperature (7) for maximum SGR was 26 degreesC (SGR = 1.715 - 0.322T + 0.022T(2) - 4.233e(-4)T(3)). Feed intake (FI)... |

Growth of juvenile pollack was assessed at five constant temperatures (9, 12, 15, 18 and 21 degrees C) in an 84-day trial. Duplicate groups of 75 fish (initial weight 143 +/- 2 g) were held in O-2 saturated water (102-103% saturation) and fed to apparent satiation. Growth increased as temperature increased from 9 degrees C up to a plateau at 12-15 degrees C (NS differences between 12 and 15 degrees C) followed by a decrease from 18 degrees C. No growth occurred at 21 degrees C. For the overall period, specific growth rates were 0.52% and 0.53% day(-1) at 12 and 15 degrees C compared to 0.40% day(-1) at 18 degrees C. Feed intake was maximum at 15-18 degrees C (0.68-0.69% day(-1)) and it was significantly lower at 21 degrees C (0.45% day(-1)). Apparent feed... |

The effects of essential fatty acid deficiency and temperature on the fatty acid profiles of polar lipids (PL) and neutral lipids (NL) from various tissues (muscle, liver, gills, eyes and brain) of European sea bass juveniles were compared in a two factorial design. Fish (60 g) were held for 84 days at 22 or 29 C (upper limit for growth) and fed either at a lower or a higher level than n-3 HUFA minimal requirement for growth (0.4% and 2.2% n-3 HUFA dry matter for diets LD and HD, respectively). Essential fatty acid deficiency had a major influence on fatty acids in NL fraction of all tissues, a more moderate influence on PL of muscle, liver and gills, while a low and very low diet influence was observed on eyes and brain PL fatty acid content,... |

Four‐year‐old pollack Pollachius pollachius L., previously fed on dry pellets since their juvenile stage, were divided into three experimental groups two months prior their first spawning season. They were fed a commercial broodstock pellet enriched with 6% added oils, either: (1) capelin oil (control), (2) capelin oil plus arachidonic acid, or (3) DHA rich tuna oil. Spawning performance was determined in each group and egg lipids were analysed. During the vitellogenic period, the estradiol levels in plasma increased with oocyte enlargement, indicating that captivity and pelleted feed did not affect reproductive capacity. Females from each group spawned spontaneously between February and May. Egg production per kg of female was highest in the control... |

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers), are lipophilic and tend to bioaccumulate in cellular membranes and fat. The accumulation of lipids in oocytes during vitellogenesis, and subsequently in the eggs, favors the accumulation of POPs, and may affect the development of embryos. The effects of dietary exposure to POPs in Common sole Solea solea were evaluated on early life stages (ELS): the survival of sole embryos and features of embryonic development were assessed until hatching endpoint and compared to that of the control. No embryonic development was observed in PBDE eggs while hatching occurred in both control and PCB groups. In addition, several developmental... |

Several physiological functions in fish are shaped by environmental stimuli received during early life. In particular, early-life hypoxia has been reported to have long-lasting effects on fish metabolism, with potential consequences for fish life history traits. In the present study, we examine whether the synergistic stressors hypoxia (40% and 100% air saturation) and temperature (15° and 20 °C), encountered during early life, could condition later metabolic response in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) juveniles. Growth rate and metabolic parameters related to carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in the liver were investigated at the juvenile stage under normoxic and chronic hypoxic conditions. Juvenile growth rates were significantly lower... |

Highly unsaturated fatty acids of the omega-3 series (HUFA) are major constituents of cell membranes, yet poorly synthesised de novo by consumers. Their production, mainly supported by aquatic microalgae, has been decreasing with global change. Understanding the consequences of such reductions is essential for ectotherm consumers, since temperature tightly regulates the HUFA content in cell membranes, maintaining their functionality. Integrating individual, tissue and molecular approaches, we examined the consequences of the combined effects of temperature and HUFA depletion on the key cardio-respiratory functions of the golden grey mullet, an ectotherm grazer of high ecological importance. For four months, fish were exposed to two contrasting HUFA diets... |

In this study, we hypothesised that a reduction in n-3 HUFA availability for higher consumers, as expected with global change, would negatively impact the physiological performances of fish. The aim was to experimentally evaluate the effect of n-3 HUFA dietary content on cardio-respiratory performances of the golden grey mullet (Liza aurata), a microalgae grazer of high ecological importance in European coastal areas. These performances were evaluated in terms of critical swimming speed U (crit), associated oxygen consumption MO2, post-exercise oxygen consumption and calcium fluxes in cardiomyocytes. Two replicated groups of fish were fed on a rich (standard diet, SD diet: 1.2 % n-3 HUFA on dry matter basis, DMB) or a poor n-3 HUFA (low n-3 HUFA diet, LD... |

Protein hydrolysate is an essential component of dry starter diets for fish larvae, as promoting healthy development. Peptides are also suitable substrates for many intestinal microbes. Five experimental diets were compared to a control diet (CONT) supplemented with a commercial fish protein hydrolysate. Each diet contained one marine protein hydrolysate, which differed by the proportion of di- and tri-peptides, and by raw materials. Two diets (HYD4 and HYD5) stimulated larval growth compared with CONT. Two other diets (HYD1 and HYD2) yielded inferior growth. HYD1 was detrimental for survival, which was associated with an up-regulation of genes involved in inflammation and antioxidative responses, while the gene coding for osteocalcin was down-regulated in... |

Background The better understanding of how intestinal microbiota interacts with fish health is one of the key to sustainable aquaculture development. The present experiment aimed at correlating active microbiota associated to intestinal mucosa with Specific Growth Rate (SGR) and Hypoxia Resistance Time (HRT) in European sea bass individuals submitted to different nutritional histories: the fish were fed either standard or unbalanced diets at first feeding, and then mixed before repeating the dietary challenge in a common garden approach at the juvenile stage. Results A diet deficient in essential fatty acids (LH) lowered both SGR and HRT in sea bass, especially when the deficiency was already applied at first feeding. A protein-deficient diet with high... |

Global climate changes have led to a depletion in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) in marine phytoplankton that—with food web transfers—could negatively impact fish performance. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a reduction in the dietary availability of n-3 PUFA on growth performance, organ allometry, and fatty acid composition in juvenile European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) raised at two different temperatures: 15 °C (natural conditions) and 20 °C (global warming scenario). Fish were fed for 5 months with two isoenergetic and isoproteic diets: a reference diet (RD; 1.65% n-3 PUFA on a dry matter basis, DM) used as a proxy of trophic networks where n-3 PUFA were plentiful, and a lower n-3 PUFA diet (LD; 0.73% n-3 PUFA on... |
